I took a pretty spectacular fall on my back last Monday

A few differences :

I'm 50, not 70.

I did it while practicing karate, not feeding the birds.

I fell onto a 1 inch think mat, not a wooden deck. Still not "soft," but certainly better than any hard surface.

My back locked up pretty good overnight, but not the kind of pain you are describing. Went to a chiropractor the next afternoon. Took it easy for the next couple of days (but still kept moving; just laying down for extended periods made it worse).

Felt pretty good by Thursday afternoon and fine by Saturday morning.
